The combat techniques contained in Kyushu-Ryu Ju-Jutsu were developed hundreds of years ago for a single purpose, war. Since that time, the system has evolved and been refined by the owners. However, the system has not weakened nor has it been dulled in its teachings.
Many modern bujutsu systems have removed the more "dangerous" and "difficult" techniques for a variety of reasons.
|
These include:
- risk of injury
- too hard to teach
- too time consuming to learn and understand
- some were simply forgotten over time

Ground immobilization
|
This is not the case with Kyushu-Ryu Ju-Jutsu. Some participants find the sheer enormity of the combat systems like Kyushu-Ryu Ju-Jutsu overwhelming and prefer to take up similar styles like Karate, which emphasizes the kicking, striking and punching techniques or Aikido which emphasizes the unbalancing, joint manipulation and some throwing techniques derived from Ju-Jutsu.
Kyushu-Ryu Ju-Jutsu is described as a "pure" system because it exists today as it was designed and taught in the time of Feudal Japan and the Samurai warrior.
|
The primary emphasis of the techniques is on body mechanics and balance of both attacker and defender. From there, the techniques of defence, and occasionally offence, include but are not limited to:
|

Wristlock come-along
|
|
- Body throws, arm throws, leg throws
- Proper falling and counter techniques
- Striking techniques using fists, open hands, elbows, knees, leg, and feet
-
- Choking and choke hold escapes
- Body holds and body hold escapes
- Ground fighting and ground defence
- Joint manipulation and controlling techniques
- Pressure point techniques utilizing pain compliance nerves and motor nerves
- Kenjutsu (sword combat)
- Weapons use and defence
|
The application and combination of these tactics in varying circumstances makes the system's techniques and possibilities seem infinite in their scope.
|
In class, emphasis is placed upon proper execution of the technique as opposed to speed and brute force. Students learn that accuracy, memory and speed will come with many, many hours of practice.
The Kyu rankings are based upon merit, dedication and proper and effective application of the techniques. The dedicated and serious students learn that he or she can "from one thing, understand many things".
